Toro pool Grau-du-Roi and surroundings, bullfighting in the Camargue
It’s a fun activity practiced in the Grau-du-Roi bullring in the Camargue. Our campsite, Les Jardins de Tivoli, is located in Le Grau-du-Roi, a fishing village near Port Camargue.
The Cité Marine de Port Camargue is ideally located between the fishing port and the protected Espiguette site.
Numerous festivals and traditions take place in the towns of Nîmes, Arles and Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Discover various festivities such as the Grau-du-Roi bull swimming pool or the Camargue races.
Originally, those who managed to get the cow into the pool were rewarded with a gift. Toro-pooling at Grau-du-roi requires skill, dodging and feinting. It’s a show that takes place in summer during patronal festivals in Provence-alpes-Côtes-d’Azur.
The toro piscine is similar to the encierro or abrivado. Encierro means “to lock up”. The bulls are locked up until the day of the bullfight. They are kept in yards adjoining the Grau-du-Roi bullring.
In the south of France, the encierro is a bull run through the streets of a village on an enclosed course.
The abrivado is an ancient practice used to drive bulls from pastures to the Grau-du-Roi bullring for races. An escort of horsemen accompanies the bulls to guarantee their safety. Abrivados are an integral part of village folklore.
A family evening in Le Grau-du-Roi
An ancestral bullfighting practice, the toro pool is one of Grau-du-roi’s most popular and attractive events. The idea behind the toro pool is to lure a cow into a pool instead of a bull. Contrary to the name of the practice, in fact. The pool is made up of straw bales placed in a square, covered with a plastic sheet filled with water.
The cow is rather young and light. Full of ardor, vivacity and drive, she’s in no mood to let anyone walk all over her! Bullfighting in Grau-du-Roi requires a lot of effort and tricks to get the animal into the pool.
The toro show in and around the Grau-du-Roi swimming pool always gets off to a flying start. Don’t miss the show put on by the Cacharelitos, the clowns of the Grau-du-Roi arena. Attempts to bull-twist the cow, bike chases and gags of all kinds will have young and old alike laughing.
For an evening of family fun, take part in the
toro piscine du Grau-du-Roi.
The game takes place in the Grau-du-Roi bullring. You can be a spectator or an actor as you see fit.
Would you like to be an instigator? Here are the rules of the game! The aim is to enter the arena facing a cow with horns dressed in balls for added protection.
The principle is simple: you have to lure the cow into the pool by any means necessary. The winner is the one who manages to get the cow into the pool as many times as possible.
