The Espiguette beach: a protected area south of Port Camargue

An immense beach of fine sand, the Espiguette beach embodies a system of white dunes 10 km long, free of any construction and up to 12 m high. These 534 natural hectares have been part of the Grand site de la Camargue gardoise since 1998 and classified as a Grand site de France since 2014.

For their preservation, the dunes of the Espiguette beach are closed to the public. A great deal of work has been carried out to ensure their longevity. These include the installation of ganivelles, wooden footbridges, signage to raise public awareness of their fragility, reinforcement of 2 strips of dune, etc.

Extending as far as the beaches of Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer, the Espiguette beach is ideal for lovers of sea bathing and authentic open spaces. The whole family can enjoy this unusual environment with its remarkable landscapes. Naturism is authorized on the Espiguette beach in a marked area.

How do I get to Espiguette beach?

Camping les Jardins de Tivoli is an 8-minute drive via the route de l’Espiguette, 30240 le grau du roi. In the area closest to Port Camargue, you’ll find free parking and a first-aid post. This area remains wild but is very popular.

For an even wilder, more natural setting, continue towards the Espiguette lighthouse. Pay parking is available for €7 a day. Finally, walk 800 metres across the dunes to reach the sea.

At this point, the Espiguette beach is less frequented. You’re sure to find the peace and serenity you’re looking for. Perhaps you’ll catch a glimpse of the pink flamingos?

Espiguette beach: discover the Espiguette lighthouse

Close to the Route de l’Espiguette campsite in Le Grau-du-Roi is the Espiguette lighthouse. For 150 years, from the top of its 27 meters. This emblematic lighthouse of the Camargue gardoise dominates the sea, the fishing port and, of course, the espiguette beach.

Since 2012, this square, black monument has been listed as a historical monument. Access is therefore regulated. Originally built 150 meters from the sea, the Espiguette lighthouse is now 700 meters from the shore. This retreat is caused by the movement of ocean currents, which bring sand back along the coast.
