The toro piscine is similar to the encierro or abrivado. Encierro means “to lock up”. In Spain, the bulls are locked up in the courtyards adjoining the bullring before the corrida. In the south of France, the encierro is a bull run through the streets on an enclosed course.
The abrivado is an ancient practice used to drive bulls from pastures to the bullring for races. An escort of horsemen accompanies the bulls to guarantee their safety. Abrivados are an integral part of village folklore.
A family evening at the toro pool in Grau-du-Roi
An ancestral bullfighting practice, the toro pool is one of Grau-du-roi’s most popular and attractive events. Contrary to its name, the idea behind toro piscine is to lure a cow into a pool instead of a bull. The pool is made up of straw bales placed in a square, covered with a plastic sheet filled with water.
The cow is rather young and light. Full of ardor, vivacity and drive, she’s not always in the mood to let her hooves be trodden! Bullfighting in Grau-du-Roi requires a lot of effort and tricks to get the animal into the pool. The toro pool show in Le Grau-du-Roi gets off to a flying start with a show by Cacharelitos, the clowns of the Grau-du-Roi arena. Attempts to bull the cow, bike chases and gags of all kinds will amuse young and old alike.

If you’d like to be an instigator, the aim is to enter the arena facing a cow with horns dressed in balls for added protection. The principle is simple: you have to lure the cow into the pool by any means necessary. The winner is the one who manages to get the cow into the pool as many times as possible.

The toro pool at Grau-du-Roi is open in July and August. The Grau-du-Roi bullfighting pool takes place three times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) in the local arena, from 9pm to 11:30pm.
