The Musée Fabre: a benchmark for European art

Among Montpellier’s many museums, the Musée Fabre stands out as one of the most emblematic in France. Founded in 1928 on the initiative of painter François-Xavier Fabre, it houses an exceptional collection spanning the Renaissance to the present day. Its 7 exhibition rooms will amaze you with over 2,000 paintings, 4,000 drawings, 300 sculptures and 1,500 engravings.

Contemporary art galleries, dedicated to great names such as sculptor Pierre Soulages, and Simon Hantaï, a pioneer of post-war French painting, cohabit with works byEugène Delacroix and Frédéric Bazille. The Hôtel Cabrières Sabatier Espeyran houses the Musée Fabre’s decorative arts department.

Guided tours allow you to discover the Musée Fabre’s permanent collections, as well as its internationally renowned temporary exhibitions. Throughout the year, a variety of workshops and events enrich this cultural experience.

The Conservatoire d’Anatomie: a scientific treasure trove

For science and medicine enthusiasts, we can’t recommend a better activity during your stay in the Camargue than a visit to the Conservatoire d’Anatomie.

This Montpellier museum, located 35 km from our campsite, has been housed in theMontpellier Medical School since 1852. Today, you can admire over 13,000 objects.

During your visit, you’ll see wax and papier-mâché casts, surgical instruments, medical waxes and orthopedic equipment in the showcases of the large gallery . You’ll also have the chance to discover collections of skeletons, and rare items relating to anthropology and embryology.

Note that you can only explore this cultural site in Montpellier, located 45 minutes from our establishment, as part of a guided tour, which costs between €12 and €15.

The Montpellier History Museum: a journey through the past

If you’re passionate about discovering the past of France’s major cities, a visit to the Musée d’Histoire de Montpellier is a must!

The latter allows you to explore Montpellier’s underground spaces, as it is located in the foundations of the Romanesque church of Notre-Dame des Tables, which was destroyed in the 18th century. You’ll find it between Place de la Comédie and Place Jean Jaurès, just 35 km from our campsite near the beaches of Grau du Roi.

In this unique setting, you’ll discover the many facets of Montpellier’s past through a virtual tour featuring a variety of audio and visual animations. In just 40 minutes, the evolution of the city and its inhabitants, from ancient times to the present day, will be revealed to you.

The Musée de l’Art Brut, art in the singular

Are you most impressed by art that’s off the beaten track and handled by souls with a singular sensibility? Then visit the Musée d’Art Brut de Montpellier!

Here, you’ll have the pleasure of discovering the works of self-taught creators, those who have never attended art school, but who have an undeniable creative instinct. A tribute is paid to over 250 artists who meet these criteria. These include Fernand Michel, Jean-Joseph Sanfourche and Simone Le Carré-Galimard, whose paintings and other works you’ll see in permanent and temporary exhibitions. Over 750 objects to contemplate await you in this 800 m2 space, which also includes a beautiful interior garden and a bookshop specializing in art brut.

Located in the heart of the Beaux-Arts district, this Montpellier museum is 33 km from our campsite and less than 2 km from the Musée Fabre. The visit costs €8.

Musée Archéologique Henri Prades: following in Montpellier’s original footsteps

Among the other museums in our selection of the best cultural sites in Montpellier, we couldn’t forget the Musée Archéologique Henri Prades. If you’re a vacationer with a passion for ancient civilizations, you won’t be disappointed by this immersion in the city’s thousand-year-old history! When you visit this Montpellier museum, you’ll have access to Phocaean, Iberian, Etruscan and Roman collections, offering a fascinating perspective on the history of Languedoc.

The treasures uncovered during excavations at the Lattara archaeological site will reveal the daily lives of the inhabitants of the past century.
